A Martial Art is like a suit…
Any given martial art does not work well for everyone. The short, stout, and firm may not be a good match for an art or style that requires limberness, such as an art that prefers high kicks. Likewise, a tall, nimble individual may find difficulty rolling in tight clinches. The wrong style can be like a suit that does not fit.
That may seem obvious, but there is more to it than that. Beyond the physical cut, there is style. The suit might fit, but that does not mean you like thin lapels. You may prefer flash, or you may like to stroll more low-key. While a martial art’s physical demands may work well with your physique, the art’s approach may run counter to your spirit.
If your heart cries out for a physical expression like a martial art, understand the first one you try may not fit. It may not fit your body; it may not fit your personality. Be prepared and willing to experiment and sample several arts, even several schools within the same art, until you find something that not only fits your frame, but also fulfills your soul.
